Welcome to Martin's Web Pages Born in April 1997, at just 13, Martin is one of the UK's youngest professional Punch and Judy professors. Martin is currently performing his show for the fourth year running and is performing regularly in 2010. His next public performance will be in the gardens of St. Paul's Church in Covent Garden, London alongside lots of other Punch and Judy professors and will be competing for the 'Young Puppet Professor of the Year' award. Martin has been interested in Punch and Judy since an early age. With both of his parents being full-time professors, he didn't really have a choice over his ambition! His dream started in 2006 when in Candies Gardens in Guernsey, his mum was doing a puppet show. She'd also brought some puppets for the children that liked the show to play with. After one of the shows, Martin had decided he wanted to do a show. Performing behind a white sheet, Martin did his very own Punch and Judy show using his mum's puppets in front of a small audience and in fact the new mayor of Guernsey! The dream continued when he decided to take over from his mum and perform at his school fete in 2007 (he also performed again in 2008). After that decision, his mum made him his own booth and carved him some parlour size puppets perfect for his hands. The dream was finally achieved. Martin also performs other puppet shows such as Persephone and Three Little Pigs (see page 4). As mentioned above, Martin comes from a family of puppeteers. His dad (Peter Battey) is a regular performer at Newmarket Racecourse, Colchester Park and Clacton Beach, along with many performances at fetes and other events throughout East Anglia. His mum (Miraiker Battey) also performs and often does puppet workshops in schools and public parties and carves puppets including Martin's.
